Study Guide for the Science Test

The boys have a Science Test on Friday. The study guide is below:

9TH AGE SCIENCE STUDY GUIDE

My test is _________________________

• Be familiar with the vocabulary words highlighted in yellow from pages 280, 290, and 304. ***These words will be matching and multiple choice, so you do not have to memorize them**

• Know different places where Celsius and Fahrenheit would be used to measure temperature ( example – checking the weather in Canada)

Safety at Home

On Friday, the Ninth Age attended an assembly led by some volunteers from the Red Cross. The focus of the presentation was to be pro-active concerning any possible problems including blizzards, tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, and fires. There were many tips concerning fire safety. These included having working smoke detectors throughout the house and having a plan of how to get out of the house if there is a fire. It was stressed that each person should have two exit routes planned in case fire blocks one of them. The motto that echoed through the auditorium was, "Don't be scared, be Prepared!!"

How to Shoot a Basketball

Mr. Vorsteg showed this video in PE class today so that the boys would know the correct form to shoot a basketball. He encouraged the boys to use the proper form at school and at home. Many of the drills can be done without a basket if you do not have one.

Kindness Around Every Corner

I don't normally carry my camera through the halls, but today I had it since I wanted to take pictures of the ice cream sundae celebration in the cafeteria. As I was walking to lunch with the rest of the class, I came upon the two boys seen below in the picture...one boy helping another tie his shoelace. The job was nearly done as I passed. The one doing the tying asked his friend if he wanted it to last all day. The boy said that he did, and the double knot was secured in place. It is wonderful to work in a place where simple joys are the rule instead of the exception. I see them every day. Today I was lucky enough to have my camera in hand to capture this precious moment.

Ice Cream Sundae Day!!

We usually have ice cream on Fridays for dessert after lunch, but having a sundae with chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and sprinkles was a real treat. Mrs. Webster, Dr. Trusty, and Mr. Clapp were the servers, and they brought a smile to every face.

Far Out Resolutions

In composition class today we started our composition concerning our New Year's Resolutions. Instead of dealing with the mere troubles we human face, the boys have transformed themselves into aliens living on a planet far, far away. After giving a brief description of their world, they are to describe an element that they need to work on changing. The initial attempt does not go well, but a second attempt gets the job done. Feel free to discuss the predicament your son chose for himself and how it is eventually resolved. The class discussion was fantastic and even took a side trip into geography as we talked about why a year here on Earth is approximately 365 days long. I let the boys know that their years could be a different duration and that their choice could impact the plot of the story. I can't wait to see how these compositions turn out, and I'll be certain to post a few of them on the blog as well.

The Subject Pronoun Game

In grammar class today we learned about subject pronouns. After learning what they are and their function, we broke into groups of four for an enrichment activity. The goal was to tell a story without using any subject pronouns. One boy would start a story and three others would listen attentively for the presence of any subject pronouns. Once the storyteller used one his story would halt, and the boy to his left would start a new story. The activity continued for about ten minutes so that each boy would get at least one chance to be the storyteller. The boys loved the activity and wanted it to continue. I told them to share it as a dinnertime activity which should be fun at home as well.
